Society Interiors magazine covers the journey of Ar.Prem Nath

Architect Prem Nath has seen his dream turn into reality but he still continues to be a Man on a Mission. A gold medalistfrom. JJ School of Architecture, Prem Nath was never contended to rest on his laurels, but always looked ahead for greater design challenges. He is best described as, One who transforms an empty canvas into pulsating life'. To which he adds, "The ultimate aim of any building is its user satisfaction. Great design is not necessarily good design. While good design has a greater effect on the end-user and society. Simple, logical, everlasting, not too expensive and functional design without any acrobatics involved, is sure to make user enjoy and feel safe in their buildings."

Being in the industry for over 40 years, he has achieved success in a wide array of projects like residential, commercial complexes, IT/SEZparks, large integrated townships, hospitality, malls and multiplex, high-end residential villas and celebrity homes.

He is one of the very few to take early initiative to become member of the US Green Building Council (USGBC) & Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), so as to set a milestone for people to follow the present day awareness of green buildings, energy-efficient structures, LEED ratings and so on. He has recently been awarded an environmental clearance with GOLD Grading, by the Ministry of Environment & Forest's (MoEF's) State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC), Punjab for his project- the HMEL Refinery Township at Bathinda, Punjab.

1.            What is the inspiration to excel consistently in your work?

Prem Nath: Excellence, itself is inspiring. Once you taste success, it inspires you to be ahead in the league. As Ayn Rand puts it, 'This world belongs to superior people...'

2.            What are the challenges and complexities that you come across while designing and

how do you tackle them?

PN: Architecture itself is challenging. We architects are trained to visualize and overcome difficulties and not be skirting around. Architecture is not just an art; it has to be feasible to materialize. One must have the skill to be able to create that is visualized. These complexities are part of day-to-day situations. Staying ahead, being up-to-date with the lifestyle and the changing needs has always been a challenge.

3.            How has technology and communication become more important? Is it influencing

design?

PN: My style of architecture was and would always remain clean, simple and functional backed by knowledge and resource of technology. I believe that it is very necessary to be ahead of time, which moves you to craft the most functional, usable space with the varied complex technology and resources to cater to simple human needs.

4.            In your journey through 40 years, what are the rewards (not the awards) from this

profession that you truly cherish?

PN: Being an architect itself is rewarding. Architecture gives one the opportunity to see and experience things beyond life. Personally, architecture has been enlightening, evolving, with lot of contentment without any hassles. Architecture to me is a journey to spiritual attainment
