Puratan “The Ancient Times” Restaurant

Article Compiled by Rahul Sharma

Puratan “The Ancient Times” is one of the Delhi’s new restaurants which seem to be having stirring effects on its patrons. Located on a prime sector road adjoining Japnese Park & near Metro Walk in Rohini, North Delhi. You just can't miss glimpse of this restaurant & it generates an inquisitiveness to know about this place while passing by road. Puratan restaurant is on second floor of Garg Plaza, Sector-11, Rohini, Delhi.

Architect Arun Sharma told "The idea was to create the essence of a heavenly place, with an atmosphere of peace & tranquillity in the surrounding which is enforced by the inter play of key elements like rough sandstone, light & sound. The idea of creating an axis of orientation is developed keeping in mind the ancient Indian architecture of the Hindu Temple with the special emphasis of nodal points with the sculptures".

The movement is emphasised by the running water channels, along the pathways, observed in the open drainage system of old times that formed a major part of architectural typology. The whole setting symbolises wisdom of awakened mind, dispelling the darkness of delusion & mental obscuration. The terrace is a dialogue of inside & outside where one have the feeling of puritan nagar. The use of gum bags as an elevation character on the terrace is visible from the road. At entrance solid hand chiselled sand stone sculpture with the presence of suspended metal jaali evokes the essence of Hindu art, entering into heaven, the God’s abode. The mysterious atmosphere is well demonstrated by the dim lights in the form of sculpture & rusted metal jaalis. The experience of ancientness is emphasised in a subtle way by conceptualising the traditional Indian architecture in an elegant way.

Bull sculpture which is the symbol of ‘life energy’ is beautifully carved out of the stone wall which becomes focal point of dining space. The space uses layering and a play of raw & detailed elements to build a warm space. Natural slabs of sand stone are used in different levels with LED lights in between the intimates the fire used for lighting in ancient times.

Hindu art is one whose origins are, all too often beyond, the reach of scientific investigations. We analysed the extra ordinary forms to cast light on the source of Hindu architecture, which remain obscure.
